In a documentary done by the Wall Street Journal two Americans explore the large consumer culture surrounding mobile payment that has skyrocketed in China over the past few years.  This large use of mobile payment features through Chinese mega-apps such as WeChat that offers a multitude of features to those on its apps.  Because credit card companies such as Visa had a hard time getting into China's economy due to its government, mobile payment services have taken off.

Through these Chinese mega-apps people order food, pay for items, message others, play games, hail cabs, rent bike and take advantage of the many other services the apps present.  In the video it is noted that people in China are far less concerned with their personal data being collected.  It is speculated that China has been able to integrate this technology into its smartphone-run society for this reason, as well as the fact that smartphones are far cheeper in China than in the West.

The government has been known to collect massive amounts of data on its citizens, the large app companies help this process, yet a justification provided by a Chinese citizen who is heavily integrated into the smartphone-based society is that she is doing nothing wrong and therefore has nothing to worry about.

I wonder if it is only a matter of time before we in the West and specifically the U.S. allow mega apps to run our society, and track all of our purchases.  We seem to slowly be caring less for our privacy in exchange for new services, yet at a much slower pace than countries like China.

In conclusion, if we want to predict the future of technology here at home in America we must look to China, the swiftly growing technological society of the future.  China in my opinion is one of the most media-influenced countries in the world.
