ADVERTISMENT OVERLOAD: MAJOR LEAGUE SPORTS
Last weekend I attended the A's game in Oakland vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. I have been to many MLB games and NBA games in my lifetime, however I did not pay much attention to the massive amounts of advertisements presented at these games. Over the course of this class I have increased my awareness of how much advertising we are exposed to, and going to a game where even the 7th inning stretch was a "sponsored" event was a huge wake-up call to the large amounts of advertising we have been watching our whole lives whether we are attending games in person or watching them on TV.
As I was watching the Cavs and Warriors play at Oracle tonight (on TV) I again saw a similar scenario to the A's game. Youtube red ads amongst other gleamed in the background as well as Chase Bank ads by the Jumbotron, making it nearly impossible to enjoy a game without being drawn into advertisements during the game. Not to mention the commercials in-between in which Shaq tells us exactly why we need the latest form of icy-hot and, how Carl's Jr. has a great new burger.
As I watch other TV channels and programs I realize how the advertiser uses the program as a basis for the advertisement they show, this has become a new game of observation for me, in light of learning about advertising within this class.
I think that it is increasingly important to realize how companies are targeting us, and often blindsiding us with their sneaky use of ads that they integrate into nearly every aspect and form of entertainment of our lives.
