MissRepresentation: Response 3

If you agree that is an issue how should we address it?

I agree with the documentary’s conclusion that the media has created unrealistic, and often toxic images for what men and women should act and look like.

In the documentary the solutions presented in solving this issue were supporting women, being able to understand media, not partaking in objectifying women, and being a voice for women’s rights.

While these are all valid solutions I would say that change comes from the top.  If we tune out the media that wants us to objectify women or creates unhealthy representations of how women should look and act we will force media companies to portray females as intricate and central figures on television and in movies, rather than simply showing them as sexual objects desired by male characters.

If women are depicted for more than just their looks and in less provocative ways then the playing field for women and men will be more level, as society will start to respect and acknowledge women as intellectuals rather than the simply sexy objects seen on billboards and advertisements.

And finally, it is up to us as a young generation to support movements for women’s rights, support women in leadership roles, and teach the next generation of young people that women can do just as much as men, and are just as smart as men.  We cannot let them fall into the same traps of the media that wishes to make us feel lesser when we do not conform to the single “perfect” image of how a male or females should act and look.  Instead we should teach them to become the best versions of themselves and take part in what they are passionate about instead of worrying about the images the media wants them to take-on.
