MERCHANTS OF COOL VS. J. COLE: LOVE YOURZ

MERCANTS OF COOL VS. J. COLE: LOVE YOURZ
After watching the documentary, “Merchants of Cool,” I was overwhelmed with the intensive and manipulative ways in which advertisers attempt to make us feel that we do not have enough, or that we need to buy more new things to make us feel fulfillment in our lives. In fast-moving culture where trends and things that are “cool” die overnight, I feel that it is important to take time to remind ourselves that we need to appreciate what we have, and more importantly the people around us, instead of constantly yearning for more things to buy to make us happy.

J. Cole's song, "Love Yourz" is one of my favorite songs because of its important message to appreciate what you have, and avoid being blinded by jealousy and greed.  I think that Cole's repetitive chorus in the song, "No such thing as a life that better than yours." is an important reminder in a world that continually makes us think that we need things to make our lives happy or better.

In our constant quest for fulfillment in life we must focus on appreciating what we have and those around as in order to find true happiness.  When Cole says that their is, "Always gon' be a while that's better than the one you got, Always gon' be some clothes that's fresher than the ones you rock... But you ain't never gon' be happy 'til you love yours" He touches on our tendency to always be searching for something more and something better due to a society so heavily influenced by advertisements and desires for "superior" goods.

While it is important to feel financially secure, it should not dictate our happiness, instead we should focus our attention to the joys in life that we should be more appreciative of.  Cole does not say that being financially insecure is good, and relates to his listeners who may come from places of financial hardship by saying that he has also experienced their struggle, yet tells them from a place of great wealth that he has realized that money does not equate to happiness.

When reflecting on this until of advertisements and their powerful effects on us as consumers, the most valuable thing that I have been able to take any from the lessons is the idea that we cannot let companies fool us into believing that their products will enable us to live perfect lives through a purchase, because money cannot buy permanent or genuine happiness, which is why we must cherish the lives we live in order to find satisfaction in a world that wishes us to never find it.

This song acts an important reminder, and is also an all around great song by and incredibly talented artist.

"Love Yourz" lyrics

Love yours
Love yours
No such thing

No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing, no such thing

Heart beatin' fast, let a n**** know that he alive
Fake n****, mad snakes
Snakes in the grass let a n**** know that he arrived
Don't be sleepin' on your level cause it's beauty in the struggle n****
Goes for all y'all
It's beauty in the struggle n****
(Let me explain)
It's beauty in the struggle, ugliness in the success
Hear my words or listen to my signal of distress
I grew up in the city and though some times we had less
Compared to some of my n**** down the block
Man, we were blessed
And life can't be no fairytale, no once upon a time
But I be God damned if a n**** don't be tryin'
So tell me mama please why you be drinking all the time?
Does all the pain he brought you still linger in your mind?
Cause pain still lingers on mine
On the road to riches listen this is what you'll find
The good news is n**** you came a long way
The bad news is n**** you went the wrong way
Think being broke was better

No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing, no such thing

For what's money without happiness?
Or hard times without the people you love
Though I'm not sure what's 'bout to happen next
I asked for strength from the Lord up above
Cause I've been strong so far
But I can feel my grip loosening
Quick, do something before you lose it for good
Get it back and use it for good
And touch the people how you did like before
I'm tired of living with demons
Cause they always inviting more
Think being broke was better
Now I don't mean that phrase with no disrespect
To all my n**** out there living in debt
Cashing minimal checks
Turn on the TV see a n**** Rolex
And fantasize about a life with no stress
I mean this shit sincerely
And that's a n**** who was once in your shoes
Living with nothin' to lose
I hope one day you hear me
Always gon' be a bigger house somewhere, but n**** feel me
Long as the people in that motherf**** love you dearly
Always gon' be a whip that's better than the one you got
Always gon' be some clothes
That's fresher than the ones you rock
Always gon' be a b**** that's badder out there on the tours
But you ain't never gon' be happy till you love yours

No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing, no such thing

Heart beatin' fast, let a n**** know that he alive
Fake n****s, mad snakes
Snakes in the grass let a n**** know that he arrive
